A month before the launch of the project, Lida, Penny and the rest of the volunteers were informed that the construction could not proceed in NKA's Arts Center in Abetenim, a small community 5 hours by road from Accra, because a local chief had vetoed the plan.

Fortunately the NKA Foundation had a second site in Sang, a larger community in Northern Ghana about 12 hours from Accra, and the project could proceed as planned.

Sang, a town of 10000 inhabitants, is the capital of Mion District in Northern Ghana. The people make their living predominantly through farming and agriculture while the majority of them find themselves below the poverty line.

The climate of the region is relatively dry, with a single rainy season that begins in May and ends in October. The dry season starts in November and ends in March or April. The harmattan winds, which occur from December to early February, have a considerable effect on temperatures in the region, making them vary from 14 degrees Celcius at night and 40 degrees Celcius during the day. Humidity is very low, aggravating the effect of the daytime heat. The rather harsh climatic conditions hamper the economic activity in the region. They also enable cerebrospinal meningitis to thrive, almost to endemic proportions. Even though the disease is currently under contril, a vast area is still underpopulated and under-cultivated due to past ravages of river blindness. (Source: Ghana Statistical Service, June 2013).

Sang's population, just like the rest of the population of Northern Ghana, is disproportionately youthful and has the potential of increasing the productive force with time. However, Ghana's children also require more and improved social services such as schools, hospitals and recreational centers to foster their development.

The future must start now.
